Jellyfish Friends

Cleaner Snail

$3

Cleaner Snails roam your tank in search of uneaten food, algae and other debris. They have a passion for cleanliness. Sometimes they hide out in the substrate at the bottom of your tank, rummaging through the food that gathers there. Other times they travel up the sides of your tank and devour any algae in their path. These approximately one-inch (sizes vary) snails make a great companion for jellyfish. They also get along well with hermit crabs. If your tank has snails and room temperatures regularly fall below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, you should add an aquarium heater to your tank.

Red Leg Hermit Crab

$5

Red Leg Reef Hermit Crabs are native to the Atlantic reefs found bordering the Americas. This crab is also known as a dwarf red and equal-handed hermit crab. Their diet consists of algae and uneaten foods. Hermit crabs spend much of their time sifting through the live rock at the bottom of your jellyfish tank. At feeding time they become very active, scurrying around the bottom of the tank to feed upon the uneaten jellyfish food raining down on them. This species must molt in order to grow. Generally at night, it will leave its shell home, lay on its back, and exit its exoskeleton. A new exoskeleton is excreted and will harden over a period of several hours. The animal is vulnerable at this time and should not be disturbed.

If you use hermit crabs to clean up uneaten food, we recommend one hermit crab per jellyfish in the tank. Hermit crabs also do well with cleaner snails. An aquarium heater is necessary if average water temperature drops below 70 degrees. If you have your crab for a long time, you may want to find new bigger shells for it to move into when it outgrows its current shell.
