What is the Best Jellyfish Sting Treatment?

Everyone claims to have a remedy for jellyfish stings. Some are effective and many are strange. A treatment must neutralize any stinging cells remaining on the skin and provide pain relief while the body neutralizes the venom that has already made its way under the skin.
1. The first step is to get away from the stinging jellyfish. Tentacles may be stuck to the skin, so it is important to wash the affected area with salt water (not fresh water). This will ensure no activated stinging cells remain on the skin.
2. People have applied many different concoctions to jellyfish stings, including soda, urine, vodka, meat tenderizer and bleach. The best treatment is vinegar that may or may not be mixed with water. This will chemically inactivate any remaining nematocysts. Vodka also works well.
3. There may be a lingering pain and itching sensation as the jellyfish venom irritates the skin tissue. The best remedy for these symptoms is pain relief medicine and antihistamines.
4. It is important to watch for more serious symptoms. Some jellyfish species have very potent venom and some people are hyper-sensitive to jellyfish stings. It is a good idea to go to a doctor regardless. Box jellyfish are an especially poisonous class of jellyfish and many people have died from their stings.
Sting Mate makes a very effective first aid treatment for jellyfish stings.
